Make a Wish. By Richard Lay.
I've been exploring affordable and reliable data storage options over the last few weeks, especially after starting to film videos.
Cloud storage can be reliable but can get expensive real quick.
Also, transferring large files in and out of cloud storage is slow and is restricted by my internet speed.
On the other hand, external hard disks are fast and more affordable than the cloud but can be unreliable.
I'm one accidental damage away from losing important files such as the videos I filmed for Hulry or holiday photos and videos.
A quick YouTube search on this topic would point to a local storage solution called Network Attached Storage (NAS), a rack of hard disks connected to your home or office network for easy access.
But:
These things are expensive. The NAS device itself costs around $600 without any hard disks included.
I wanted a system where I could store multiple copies of my files in separate harddisks at an affordable cost.
Upon further digging, I found a tool sitting right in my backyard.
It's the RAID Assistant that comes bundled with macOS, accessible through Disk Utility → File → RAID Assistant:
With this tool, I can connect multiple harddisks of, say, 4TB each and convert them into a single drive of 4TB on my system in a RAID 1 format.
Anything I copy in and out of my unified RAID drive will be duplicated across all the physical hard disks I have configured as part of this process.
So, if one of the physical hard disks fails, I would still have all of my data safe and accessible from the second hard disk.
I could then swap out the faulty hard disk with a new one, and the setup would work again.
Affordable, fast and reliable.
So:
If you have a few terabytes of data to store, say family photos, videos, or something work-related, asses this solution before shelling out hundreds of dollars annually on cloud storage.
See if this setup can work out for you.
