On my journey to learn more about filming, I stumbled upon an interesting tool:

Correction LUTs.

LUTs are popular in video editing for quickly applying a theme or a particular cinematic look to videos.

These are called Creative LUTs, which apply a creative look to your raw footage.

Correction LUTs, on the other hand, work a little differently.

They take your video and do a basic colour correction and light adjustment to give you an excellent foundation to process your videos further.

Here's an example of processing a video shot in HLG3 format using Leeming LUTs:

You can see how well-balanced the video gets after applying the correction LUT.

This is helpful because creative LUTs only work well on some videos.

Creative LUTs can make your processed film look out of whack without basic colour adjustments.

The same idea applies to real life.

Without a good base or a starting point to build upon, no matter how much effort or technique you put into something, it might be futile.

You won't get the expected results and might have to rework it entirely.

So:

When working on some project, be it at work or something personal, make a recurring reminder to check in on how solid your foundation is before each milestone.

For example, if you're building an app, it's crucial to start with an architecture that helps you build new features easily and rapidly.

It's the same reason why having a good vision or outline of an article you're planning to write helps produce delightful reads.

Without these base correction check-ins at the beginning and during the life stage of your projects, it's easy to deviate to the wrong track.

And no matter how much hustle or grind you put into your work, it won't matter if you're climbing the wrong hill.

So:

Before starting any project, spend some time thinking about how to start with a good foundation that helps you achieve your project's goals.

In other words, apply a correction LUT to your work before you invest too much time into it.
