I've been exploring some photography tutorials lately when I stumbled upon a video on choosing the correct aperture for photos.

Although I've been shooting photos for nearly a decade and well-versed with what's an aperture and how it affects our photos, this video was still a refreshing take.

It helped me jog the old concepts and learn a few new tricks.

But, the thing is, we don't get to experience these awe moments often.

A reason behind this is as we amass knowledge, we tend to close our minds and limit ourselves to what we know already.

For example:

When I spotted this video on my YouTube feed, a knee-jerk reaction would've been to dismiss it and move on to something else.

I already know about choosing suitable apertures, so why would I waste time on a video on the same topic?

But I'm glad that I paused and took the opportunity to watch the video.

I got a great framework out of it that I can apply to easily and quickly choose the proper settings for my photos.

So, here's what I'm planning to do:

This month, I'm going back to basics with photography.

Whether relearning the exposure triangle, depth of field, or some other camera tricks, I'll keep an open mind and rewatch tutorials on all things photography.

What I'm hoping to get out of this little excursion is to close gaps in my photography knowledge and be able to shoot better photos on my next trip.

I'll let you know how that goes. Probably with some before and after photos.

If this has also spiked your interest, why don't you pick a topic you already know and relearn it?

See if there are gaps that you can close to understanding the concepts better.

And if you choose to do it, I'd love to know how it panned out for you. You can save this email and hit reply whenever you feel like sharing.

Now:

Continuing on the topic of amping up your knowledge, have you ever tried the N-Back Challenge?
