Hey there,

Apple recently introduced App Privacy Report on iOS 15.2 and iPadOS 15.2, which lets you track how your device is being used by the apps installed.

I've been giving this feature a try, and it's interesting.

Turning on App Privacy Report via Settings → Privacy → App Privacy Report, you'll see a report like this:

Tapping on an app in the report will get you details on how frequently the app has accessed your data.

For example, here's the Fi app accessing my location data multiple times:

And this privacy report doubles down as a DNS request tracker as well.

You can understand how frequently your usage data is being sent to advertising and monitoring services by the apps you use.

To access this information, scroll down to the App Network Activity section of the report and tap on a listed app.

Here are all the network requests made by Instapaper on my iPhone:

I can see plenty of calls to advertising and analytics services from the app.

And the best thing about this report is that your report data stays encrypted in your device. It never hits the Apple servers.

A small but handy feature for the privacy-conscious.

Now, grab a coffee, sit tight, and enjoy this week's issue:

Apps & Services

MD Blank ➔

Customise your iOS home screen

A common complaint about the iOS home screen is not being able to rearrange the app icons on the screen like Android. You can't have a screen that is 80% blank and only has a single row of app icons. Well, now you can. With this handy widget, you can create blank spaces on your home screen and rearrange your app icons and widgets however you want. Available only for iPhone, for free.
Snipd ➔

AI-generated chapters for your favourite podcasts

Snipd is a modern podcast player that uses AI to generate chapters from a podcast episode. You can save time and quickly skip to an exciting point in an episode by tapping on a generated chapter. You also can highlight a part of the currently playing episode and have the highlight delivered to Readwise and other services for note-taking. Available for free on Android and iOS.
Writerly ➔

Generate entire content from keywords

Writerly is a mind-blowing tool that lets you generate entire pieces of blog posts, emails, ad copies, landing page copies, and more with a handful of keywords. I tried generating blog post outlines by writing a one-liner description of what I wanted. The results were eerily accurate and usable. An antidote to writer's block. Available as a web app starting at $39/month.
Padlet ➔

Create boards and timelines for anything

Padlets are shareable boards with different views. You can create a timeline of your project with the Timeline view. You can plan your next trip using a board with the Map view. You can create a Trello like kanban board. And do much more with Padlet. Each Padlet can be shared publicly or with your friends using a password. Available as a web app and is free for up to 3 padlets.
