I recently saw a post on social media saying the author lost access to a suite of important accounts, even business accounts, because they had used Google Sign-in everywhere, and Google deactivated their account.

This is not the first time I've thought of or heard about such a situation. Accounts often get flagged for false reasons.

If you use your Google account to sign in to every other service, you're setting up a central point of failure because if you lose access to your Google, Apple or other social login account for any reason, you'll have a hard time restoring access to every other account.

Moreover, this setup isn't portable.

Say, you sign up to Google Workspace, set up a custom domain email, and use that Google account to log in to all other work accounts.

What happens when you decide you want to switch your email provider from Google to, say, Fastmail?

Every linked account now needs to be ported to a regular password login before you switch providers. Otherwise, you lose access.

I understand social logins can be convenient, but so is a password or passkey-based login if you use a password manager. But you get high portability and isolation.

Losing access to one account doesn't risk losing access to all other dependent ones.

This is something worth thinking about, if you're using social logins on most services you sign up for.

How to Not Know

While we usually try to reduce uncertainty in our lives, we have to understand that we live in a world full of uncertainties. This book is aimed at making us comfortable living in such a world.

Apps & Services

Senso

Look at the news from an ancient perspective

I don’t know how useful this app will be, but it’s interesting for sure. For every news article on its home page, or any specific URL you drop, Senso pairs the content of the posts with classic quotes to bridge the new with the old. Provokes a different interpretation of what’s usually surface-level news. Available on the Web for free.
Tapotron

A digital fidget toy for bored minds

When you feel bored and feel the urge to fidget with your phone, this app might be a better option than social media. It’s a digital Gameboy where you tap haptic-enabled chunky buttons to play mini games. Available on iOS for free.
NetNewsWire

A reliable RSS reader, modernised

I use Reeder for browsing RSS feeds, but this legacy app with a fresh coat of paint is a fantastic alternative. The app has everything you usually need from a modern RSS reader, and is quite fast. Available on macOS and iOS for free.

This story is a solid example of why randomness in small doses can be a good thing and is something we should strive for. Probably not the best idea to go overboard like Max, but occasionally stepping out of the flow helps restore spark in our lives.
Why Japanese Companies Do So Many Different Things

This piece is a fantastic history of why Japanese companies are usually built to last. The most significant takeaway from reading this is that while the specialist mindset works in innovating, the generalist mindset is the key to staying afloat in turbulent times and reaping disproportionate benefits.

This illustrative post highlights the very reason I never opted for a smartwatch after wearing a Fitbit Versa for around a year. “What if the exhaustion everybody feels isn't a moral failure but the completely rational response to being made responsible for an ecosystem of objects that never stop asking?”
