DuckDuckGo, the search engine, is famous for its bangs, which let us quickly search and navigate to various websites such as Amazon, Goodreads, and IMDb.

But I recently came across a few other tools in this search engine that can be helpful at times.

1. Generate a QR code

Instead of using a shady website that might switch your links and ask for payment later, you can type “qr [url]” to generate a QR code that you can download and use anywhere:

2. Generate a strong password

If you use a password manager, such as 1Password or Proton Pass, they already have options to generate a random password based on your requirements.

But if you don't, and instead use your browser to save passwords, this trick will help you generate strong passwords tailored to your needs.

Type “password [length] strong” or “password [length] low” to generate a high or low strength password that you can use on a website you're signing up for:

3. Jump to a calendar month

If you need to quickly view a calendar month without having to fiddle with your calendar app, you can type “[month year] calendar”:

There are many more shortcut actions to explore, but I hope these three might come in handy to you at some point.

Now, speaking of cool stuff, have you tried Boko?

Apps & Services

Drift

An ephemeral journal to offload your mind

This journaling app will pair well with the book recommendation above. Unlike other journal apps, here you log tweet-like journal entries (up to 120 characters) with an optional drawing or photo to offload your mind. Entries slowly disappear over time, keeping your space clean. Available on iOS for free.
Accent Converter

Watch YouTube videos in a clear, standard accent

I have mixed feelings about this one, but it can be helpful sometimes. This browser extension can convert speech audio in YouTube videos to a standard English accent, which can be useful if you land on a video where the speaker’s accent is difficult to understand. Available on Google Chrome for free.
Music Map

Find new artists through an interactive graph view

Recommendations on music apps are good, but this tool is better when you’re looking for artists similar to those you already love. Start with an artist and follow along the recommendations in a connected graph to discover someone new. Available on the Web for free.
