One of my favourite movies, if not my favourite, is a Bollywood movie titled Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.
It's a movie about three childhood friends, Imraan, Kabir and Arjun, going on an epic road trip in Spain, where they challenge themselves to adventure sports and uncover some hidden truths about their lives.
I recommend watching this movie if you can find it in an audio language of your choice or are comfortable watching it with English subtitles on Netflix.
Anyway, what touched me the most when I rewatched this movie for probably the 15th or 16th time last week was one of Imraan's poems.
Imraan, an advertising copywriter in an agency in Delhi, also writes poetry in his spare time. Here's the poem (masterfully translated to English by Claude) that moved me this time:
When in your hearts
You carry your restlessness
Then you are truly alive
When in your eyes
You carry lightning of dreams
Then you are truly alive
Like gusts of wind
Learn to stay free
Like a river
Learn to flow with the waves
Meet every moment
With open arms
Let these eyes witness
Each instant as a new dawn
When in your eyes
You carry wonderment
Then you are truly alive
When in your hearts
You carry your restlessness
Then you are truly alive
Caught in the mundane routines of life — eat, work, sleep, repeat — we often lose the spark that we once carried in our lives.
During late 2022 and early 2023, I found myself in a similar spot when my days felt like living to work to pay the bills. I had no time or energy for life — to feel alive.
I renewed that spark when I quit my job to work full-time on Hulry. The hours are still long, and the work is demanding, but I've constantly found myself with an undying enthusiasm towards life.
A change of this magnitude is not always needed to shake things up. An extended adventure trip to a foreign place, learning new things (an instrument, art, subject or even culture), picking new sports, etc., are all accessible means to renew some of that lost spark in life.
And this poem will be a constant reminder to keep that spark and awe alive for me. I hope it inspires you, too.
When in your eyes
You carry wonderment
Then you are truly alive
When in your hearts
You carry your restlessness
Then you are truly alive
